Registering to vote

Primary elections

Mississippi has open primaries: there is no party registration, and on primary day you choose one party’s ballot. You can vote in only one party’s primary.

Voter ID

Mississippi requires a photo ID to vote in person. If you don’t have acceptable ID, you can vote a provisional ballot, but you must take extra steps after Election Day (such as showing ID at the election office) for it to count.

Early voting

Mississippi does not offer early in-person voting to all voters. Voters who qualify for an absentee ballot may be able to vote it in person before Election Day.

Voting by mail

Mississippi requires an approved reason (excuse) to vote by absentee/mail ballot. Check the state’s list of qualifying reasons.
