Registering to vote

Primary elections

Pennsylvania has closed primaries: only voters registered with a party can vote in that party’s primary.

Voter ID

Pennsylvania does not require most voters to show an ID document to vote in person; election workers confirm identity in other ways, such as checking a signature or personal information. First-time voters who registered by mail may need to show ID under federal law.

Early voting

Starts: Counties will begin preparing in-person mail/absentee ballots after the official candidate list is certified, no earlier than 50 days before the election. The timing of availability of ballots may vary by county. Ends: 5 p.m. first Tuesday prior to day of election. Locations and hours are set locally.

Voting by mail

Any Pennsylvania voter can request an absentee/mail ballot. No excuse is needed.
