Voting in Georgia

Voting rules are set by each state. This is a summary of Georgia voting rules, checked Nov. 4, 2026, from Vote.gov (U.S. government), the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) and Ballotpedia. Rules and dates can change, so confirm with Georgia’s official election website or your local election office before each election.

Registering to vote

Primary elections

Georgia has open primaries: there is no party registration, and on primary day you choose one party’s ballot. You can vote in only one party’s primary.

Voter ID

Georgia requires a photo ID to vote in person. If you don’t have acceptable ID, you can vote a provisional ballot, but you must take extra steps after Election Day (such as showing ID at the election office) for it to count.

Early voting

Starts: Fourth Monday prior to a primary or election; as soon as possible prior to a runoff. Ends: Friday immediately prior to a primary, election or runoff. Locations and hours are set locally.

Voting by mail

Any Georgia voter can request an absentee/mail ballot. No excuse is needed.
